Toshiba said on Feb.19 it will no longer develop, make or market HD DVD players and recorders, handing a victory to rival Blu-ray disc technology in the format battle for next-generation video.
"We concluded that a swift decision would be best," Toshiba President Nishida Atsutoshi told reporters at his company's Tokyo office.
Nishida tried to assure the estimated million people in the world who already had bought HD DVD machines by promising that the company will provede continued product support for HD DVD.
Toshiba Corp. said shipments of HD DVD machines to retailers will be reduced and stop by the end of March.

東芝、規格競争に負けて撤退してしまいましたね。
「消費者置き去り」という記事もありましたが、早めに決着がついてよかったのではないでしょうか。
無理やり事業を続けて、引くに引けない状態になり、赤字が膨らみ、会社全体の業績が圧迫されて、結局撤退･･･これが一番最悪なシナリオではないかと。
HD DVD を買ってしまった人の、フォローは必要でしょうけどね☆

A Martime Self-Defense Force(MSDF) destroyer collided with a fishing boat off the coast of Chiba on Feb.19 , splitting the fishing boat in two and leaving two fishermen missing, officials said.
The hull of the 7.3-ton fishing boat was smashed in two, and two people on board the vessel, identified as 58-year-old Kichisei Haruo and his 23-year-old son Tetsuhiro, are missing.
Five coast guard patrol vessels, two planes and four MSDF helicopters were dispatched to search for the pair.

今回のイージス艦問題や年金問題、その他企業のさまざまな不祥事・・・・・。
私一個人の意見としては、組織の経営体質が原因でこのような問題が
起きている気がします。
１つの些細なことでも「まぁ、このぐらいいっか」って
妥協をしてしまうと、その後必ず次から次へと妥協してしまう。
そうなることで、本当はやっちゃいけないことなのに、
これはいけないことなんだって感じなくなってしまう。
感覚が麻痺するっていうかなんていうか。
組織内で妥協を決して許さない環境作りが必要なのではないかと私は思いました。

A 66-year-old horse rider was picked on Feb.13 for Japan's equestrian team to compete in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, making him the nation's oldest-ever Olympian.
Hoketsu Hiroshi will compete in the Games for the first time since Tokyo hosted the 1964 Olympics,44 years ago.
Holetsu competed in the individual jumping competition in the Tokyo Olympics. If he competes in Beijing, he will claim the record of Japan's oldest-ever Olympian from current holder Inoue Kikuko,an equestrian who competed at age 63 and nine months in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
Japan gained entry into the Olympics after finishing runner-up in the Southeast Asia-Oceania qualifiers that took place from Jan. 31to Feb. 7.The Japan Equestrian Federation selected its Beijing team by choosing the top three performers.

Helpline abuzz with complaints from 'managers
名ばかり管理職、電話相談に5時間で130件の相談
As many as 130 people supposedly working in 'managerial' positions have complained to a helpline of being underpaid and over worked.
The helpline received 130 calls in about five hours after it was opened on Feb.11, suprising the lawyers.
"The current situation offers an excuse for companies not to pay overtime wages and forces workers to work long hours,"said Natsume Ichiro, a lawyer of the association.
A woman in Chiba prefecture said her husband worked as a supervisor at construction sites and put in 110 hours of overtime a month.However, he was only paid 50,000 yen a month as a 'management' allowance.
The man subsequently committed suicide in January due to extreme fatigue.Before killing himself,the man had reportedly told his wife, "If you look at my time card after I die, you will realize how overworked I was," according to the lawyers association.

日本の残業問題って結構深刻ですよね。私も以前、某飲食店（チェーン店）でアルバイトをしていたんですけど、シフトで人手が足りないところは全て店長が埋めるという感じでした。1日に休憩なしで連続１１時間勤務とか普通にありました
見ててかわいそうです。（残業代はちゃんと支払われていたみたいですけど）
会社によっては定時に帰りづらい雰囲気が漂っているところもあるみたいですね。先輩方が帰ってないので自分も帰れない。。。。みたいな？？どこかで聞いた話で、実情はよく知らないですけど。1年後は就職活動なので、どこに就職するか迷います。会社説明会に行っただけでは社内の雰囲気まで知ることができないですからね
パソコン中毒・・・どうしよう？？
最近、定期購読している英字新聞、「毎日ウィークリー」ほったらかしにしてしまいました。全然読んでなかったですで、先週届いた英字新聞まだ1ページしか読んでないのに、今日新しい新聞が家に届いちゃった・・・。週に１回の発行で助かったぁ〜
何せ3日前に人生で初めてブログというものを作ったもんで、もうパソコンにゾッコンになっちゃって・・・。寝ても起きても自分のブログのことが気になってしょうがない・・・

そういえば、日本では検索エンジンってヤフーがかなり有名ですよね
世界でもめずらしいみたいです。他の国ではgoogleの方が圧倒的に使われているとのこと。googleの方が良いという意見聞きますが、私自身昔からずっとヤフーを使っていたのでなかなか切り替えにくいです 気づいたらヤフーのホームページ開いちゃってます。
ブログをはじめて気づいたこと。ヤフーのサイトに自分のブログやホームページ載せるのに、審査って必要なんですね
私、ブログを作れば自然とヤフーに載るものだと今まで思ってました。かな〜りびっくりしてます（＞＜） はい、私、結構機械オンチです。
私、６年間ぐらい台湾に住んでいたのですが、台湾ではわりと、グーグル・ヤフー・yamといった検索エンジンが使われてたみたいです。ちなみに中国は「百度」という検索エンジンらしい。
台湾の若者たち、かなりのパソコン好きです
日本の若者たちは、学校が終わったら居酒屋行ったり、カラオケ行ったり、バイトに行ったりということが多いですが、台湾の若者たちは夜の時間帯は決まってパソコンやってます 特にMSNのメッセンジャーを使ってチャットをしたりおしゃべりをしたりしますね。
台湾の若者のMSNメッセンジャーの使用率はおそらく9割は超えてるだろうと・・・
仲良くなりたいなと思った人には携帯番号よりまずパソコンのアドレスを聞きます
文化の違いって結構見てて楽しいです♪
